Atlantic City market very healthy or cannibalized after new casino openings

ATLANTIC CITY — Even before the opening of two casino properties in late-June, industry experts differed on what their overall impact would be on the existing gaming market.

Some believed the new properties — Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City and Ocean Resort Casino — would cannibalize the existing seven casinos’ customers, while others were of the mind that more offerings would expand the market.

Following the release of September’s casino revenue figures last week, the glass is either half-full or half-empty — depending on who is offering the perspective.

Bob Ambrose, an adjunct professor of casino management at Fairleigh Dickinson University and a gaming industry consultant, said a new competitive environment has been created with the new companies that want a stake in the Atlantic City model moving forward.
